Everyone, regardless of physical ailment, mental faculties, or affliction, have value and all deserve to be useful. That is the central ideal of the people of Permatu. They are renowned for their medical knowledge and prowess. Going beyond simply stitching up the injured, Permatuns approach to medicine includes treatment of the mind and spirit along with the body and incorporate how one lives their life to leave the patient truly better off than where they started. In the late days of Keridwyn’s control, people would go to Permatu to treat the most difficult of ailments of the mind and maladies of the soul.
During the reign of Keridwyn, Permatu was an unremarkable location beset by a rampant plague. Healers of virtue and dedication flocked from around the kingdom with the single goal of saving lives. Through years of hard work and vigilant study, the healers found a way to eradicate the plague. Many of the highest skilled healers remained to establish the Wright’s Academy of the Healing Arts and Magics. The people and land flourished under the nurturing hand of the academy. And even though the area suffered heavy losses from the plague, the new vitality caused the population to recover with impressive swiftness. The land itself took on new vigor, producing food in abundance. The weather is equally hospitable and nurturing.
When the alliance collapsed, Permatu kept its doors open to the sick, wounded, and destitute. With their pacifist stance, the city was raided frequently during the early days of the collapse. Other cities took advantage of their lack of standing army to steal their medical resources, skilled healers, alchemical reagents, and food. Permatu responded by hastily forming an armed group of their own, rallied under Captain Kiana.
An even-tempered people. Permatunes care not for amassing worldly possessions, rather placing value in people. All Permatun citizens are required to work. Those who cannot find application for their skills are assigned jobs by the republic. Prominent careers in Permatu include farming, weather conditioning ritualists, therapists, and others that improve the living condition for the citizens. The most prestigious career is being accepted into the Guild of Life. Only the most talented of healers are invited in, and they never speak of the activities they conduct. Many spies have attempted to glean information on them and have never returned. The only message that managed to leave contained something regarded as ‘the symbiote.’
The governing body, the Parliament, holds sessions open to the public. Open town hall meetings are frequent with representatives speaking on interests to the public. Healing and education are provided freely to any who wish it. Justice is approached with patience and understanding, but not with leniency. Trials tend to be lengthy affairs, seeking out as much evidence as possible. When punishments are distributed, they are carried out with severity. Laws are few, simple, and strict, with punishments of severe crimes being forced service or permanent exile. Overall crime is very low, but the exceptional health of the average citizen mixed with the idea that healthy individuals are better for blood sacrifices mean that Permatu is targeted by traffickers and other nefarious individuals. The population is diverse, but with a heavy representation of the species that are resistant to disease or naturally talented with healing. Angels, Shimmer, Rodentfused, Elves, Cog, and Rettocuru are most abundant.
